i have a question about my turtles. i have one painted and one red-eared slider. they have been in a tank for about 2 years and are mature turtles. the male (red-eared) has been vibrating his nails against her face and we had always wondered if they could breed, being different species. she just laid 3 eggs in the water over the past week for the first time. each time i missed them and they were cracked open.
would they be fertile? can they breed together?
we also have an anole, house gecko, toad, 6 cats, tropical fish, large pond fish (gold and shabunkin) and koi, which are patiently waiting for spring to go back outside.
thanks,
arleen

Re: hi, new here!
Mon, March 7, 2005 - 12:57 PMWelcome aboard, Arleen,
Hopefully someone here can give you an accurate answer to your question about turtle breeding. One of the things about "species" is whether or not they can interbreed. In recent years these catagories seem to have become a bit blurred at least for me. I can tell you that I used to have two species of box turtles that lived in my backyard and they would interbreed and have hatchlings. How fertile the hatchlings were I don't know. They could have been "mules".
