Update: Carl remained here with me, living in luxury on a sundeck on the beach. I noticed when I returned home from a short trip ( the pet sitter was here with the dogs and cat....but they never come in contact with each other)that about 1/4- 1/2 inch of his tail's end is not there. Extremely clean cut, no infection (I don't think), just not there anymore. He does roam freely on his deck, where there are a few chairs, rocks (to rub on)....he may have caught it underneath the circular rim of the lawn chair. I dunno. He's also in the process of shedding.
