Hi, everyone!

I'm about to start fostering/volunteering with a Reptile (and whatnot) Rescue. I'm pretty much on my own since they are based in Houston and I'm in Dallas. I've never owned any except for a turtle named George when I was a kid. I was hoping to get any advice/recommendations from you guys, i.e. good books, websites, cheap but reputable places to buy the reptile paraphenilia, etc... Anything you got, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks a bunch!

    Hi Holli,

I hope those folks will give you a little financial support. The animals I found to be most often on "rescue lists" were large. Iguanas headed the list followed by boas and such that became too large to handle easily. After that there are turtles. I would recommend locating your local herpetological society, club, etc, for hands on information. Do you know a little carpentry? Building your own inclosures may be the way to go.

Thanks, George, for the advice. It feels like I've jumped into something without knowing how deep it is, but I'm still excited.

The organization will give me ideas and point me in the right direction, but nothing financially. If the animals need vet work its on me...I get the adoption fee, which is cool and odd for a rescue group. It's kind of like I have my own thing going...just with a distant relative saying "way to go". (-: At any rate its something I've been wanting to do for a while. And being associated with them means I don't have to fight the government for 501c status.

I know what your saying about the size of abandoned reptiles. I've thought about building my own enclosures. It will be fun...trail by error kind of a thing. Does anyone have any blueprints/material suggestions? Unfortunately the snakes are on their own. I'll call others in the group to see if they can take them, but I can't. They make me cry...even just thinking about them. Don't wish them any harm...I just want to run away! (-: Its a primal flight or really haul ass phobia.

Well, I've started my own rescue and have narrowed it down to only Iguanas and lizards. No 501c status, but I don't get that many calls, so it works out. I was able to convince Petfinder to list my little rescue. That was some work but I've had one adoption from it and a lot of people inquiring. And I've found a big pet peeve: Why in the hell do people contact you, ask for a application, and then never ever send it back? Why are you bothering me in the first place????? grrrr.

I found a great CD on eBay that has several different cage designs on it. It was only $5 or so. Still haven't made any yet. I'm thinking of building some for sale too.
