Hey, guys,
I got a call to pick up a boa from the pound. It hasn't eaten in over 2 weeks...not because it doesn't want to but because they haven't bother to go buy a mouse. Any way, should I feed it before I transport it or wait until I get home?
I don't know anything about snakes and am desperately hoping another foster will take him ASAP!

Tue, May 3, 2005 - 10:47 AMWait until you get it home and settled!!! Give it some quiet time and some water and maybe tomorrow you can feed it! Don't need a hissy with an upset stomach! -

Re: transporting a snake
Tue, May 3, 2005 - 3:47 PMThanks.
I got it home. Its actually a Ball Python, about a foot and a half long, estimated to be about 6 months old and a girl. She's settled into the tank pretty well, so I went ahead and fed her. WOW what a rush! I've never fed a snake before...it was freaky! (-:
So, if anyone has any advice on rearing a young python girl I'd gladly accept it! -

Re: transporting a snake
Wed, May 4, 2005 - 8:25 PMDid you pre-kill the mouse? If not be aware that live ones can cause injury to the snake. The best method is to stun the mouse by hitting it against something like the floor (yes I know, pritty grose). If you do not have a taker for the snake in a few days let me know and I can probably help find a home for it. If you reply to this tribe, I will check back in a few days and can contact you.

Re: transporting a snake
Wed, May 4, 2005 - 10:24 PMThere is a pretty high demand for ball pythons. They don't grow very large and have a pretty mellow disposition for the most part. Also, they are beautiful snakes, the old name for them being regal python. The biggest problem used to be getting them on feed. You seem to already have taken care of that.

Re: transporting a snake
Thu, May 5, 2005 - 10:06 AMThanks, guys! I hope you don't mind if I ask you a few questions.
No. No live food. They tried to give me a live mouse at Petco, but I could handle the thought. Only frozen ones! I gave her one Tues...she's kind of thin, should I try another one tonight or wait until Tues again?
She isn't moving around as much as she did the first night. Just stays in a ball and pokes her head out from time to time. Is that normal?
Is it Ok to pick them up (gently I know) while they are sleeping or while they are slinking around?
She's going up on Petfinder today or tomorrow, so hopefully she'll get placed soon. She is beautiful, but my fear of snakes is definately coming back since she isn't needy or on the verge of death. (-: -

Wed, May 18, 2005 - 8:57 AMHey Holli---been off and running and haven't been on much. Handling the snake should be ok, just wash hands before and after. And they are not much for crawling around---snake tv is not much fun to watch!! :-) And the more you handle it the better the personality will remain! Have fun!! Kay -

Wed, August 31, 2005 - 3:06 PMPansy got adopted by a great family a week or so ago. It turns out she was a he. Poor thing is probably getting laughed at by his new snake buddies over his name. (-:
Now to get these foster iguanas moving! -
